DSG gearbox prices in South Africa are driven almost entirely by which unit you have and whether the mechatronic is healthy. A used seven-speed dry DQ200 out of a Polo or Golf 1.4 TSI sits between R9 500 and R32 500. A six-speed wet DQ250 from a GTI, Tiguan or 2.0 TDI runs R12 000 to R38 500. The heavy-duty DQ500 used in the Transporter is R18 000 to R45 000, and the newer DQ381 in the Golf 7.5 GTI and R is R28 000 to R55 000. Compare that with a fitted, coded exchange unit at R40 000 to R80 000 and the case for a tested used gearbox is obvious. Before you buy, get the fault codes read. A flashing gear indicator, a refusal to select a gear, or codes like P17BF and P189C usually point at the mechatronic, and a reconditioned DQ200 mechatronic at around R19 950 fixes that without touching the gearbox. Shudder pulling away and slip under load are mechanical and mean the clutch packs. Whichever route you take, budget six to nine hours of specialist labour at R300 to R650 an hour, insist on ODIS adaptation after fitment, and on any wet-clutch unit change the oil and filter at the same time.

Common questions

What does a DSG gearbox cost in South Africa?

A used seven-speed dry DQ200 runs about R9 500 to R32 500 depending on code and mileage. A six-speed wet DQ250 is R12 000 to R38 500. The seven-speed DQ500 is R18 000 to R45 000 and the DQ381 R28 000 to R55 000. A fitted, coded exchange unit from a dealer or specialist lands between R40 000 and R80 000, which is why used units are so much cheaper.

What is the difference between the 7-speed and 6-speed DSG?

The seven-speed DQ200 uses dry clutches, holds around 250 Nm and needs only about 1.7 litres of oil on the mechatronic side. The six-speed DQ250 runs wet clutches in an oil bath, handles roughly 350 Nm and takes about 5.5 litres of DSG fluid. Dry boxes go into smaller petrol cars, wet boxes into GTIs, TDIs and Tiguans.

Is my problem the mechatronic or the gearbox itself?

Mechatronic failure usually shows as a flashing gear indicator, refusal to select a gear, limp mode, or codes such as P17BF and P189C, while the car still drives when it does engage. Worn clutch packs feel mechanical: shudder pulling away, slip under load, a rising rev counter without acceleration. Get the fault codes read first — a mechatronic swap costs far less than a whole gearbox.

Is it cheaper to rebuild a DSG or replace it?

A full specialist rebuild with clutches, mechatronic overhaul, bearings and oil typically costs R28 000 to R55 000. A tested used unit of the same code plus fitment usually lands between R15 000 and R35 000 all-in. Replacement wins on most cars. A rebuild makes sense on scarce codes like the DQ381, where a used box is hard to source at any price.

How do I check a used DSG before buying it?

Ask for a photo of the code and part number on the casing, confirm the mechatronic is included and was tested rather than just visually checked, and check the bellhousing and driveshaft seals for oil. On a wet unit ask when the oil was last done. Also ask for the donor vehicle mileage — a DSG with an unverified history is a gamble at any price.

Does a used DSG need coding after fitment?

Yes. Every DSG needs basic settings and clutch adaptation run with ODIS or an equivalent tool once fitted, and later units such as the 0CW and 0GC must be matched to the vehicle immunobiliser and engine control module. Budget an extra hour of diagnostic time. A box fitted without adaptation will shift badly and can throw itself into limp mode.

How often should DSG oil be changed?

Wet-clutch boxes — DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 — need oil and filter every 60 000 km without exception, and skipping it is the single biggest cause of premature clutch and mechatronic failure in South Africa. Dry DQ200 units have sealed gear oil but the mechatronic side should still be inspected at major services. Budget R1 400 to R2 900 in parts for a wet service.

What warranty comes with a used DSG?

Three to six months on a locally stripped unit and six to twelve months on an imported low-kilometre gearbox. Cover is internal failure only. It is void if the unit is fitted without adaptation, if the DSG oil and filter are not replaced on a wet box, or if a known engine fault is left unrepaired and puts the gearbox into limp mode.

Can you deliver a DSG gearbox nationwide?

Yes. DSG units ship on a pallet, drained where applicable. Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town are typically one to three working days; smaller towns three to five. The DQ500 is the heaviest unit in the range and costs more to courier than a DQ200. Freight is quoted separately on mass and destination.
